A Cirebon Wayang Lamp Dalung/Blencong

A Rare Cirebon Wayang Lamp, Dalung/Blencong
collected from the area of Karang Ampel near Cirebon and of the style with diagnostic makara motiffs and mega-mendung (rolling cloud) decorations. Circa. early 20th century, Cirebon, West Java.
Dalung: Height: 67 cm, Width at widest point: 35 cm
Copper oil pot lamp: Height: 19 cm, Width with spout: 32 cm
Natural patinated teak, metal plaques, iron fittings, bamboo fastening pins and hand-hammered copper oil pot with lamp-wick spout, round protective ring on end.

This wayang lamp is shaped as a kayon or gunungan and it is an indispensible part of the equipment required by the dalang, puppet-master in the performance of the shadow puppet theatre. The dalung (as called in Cirebon) or blencong (as known elsewhere) provides the traditional lighting for a wayang kulit (leather shadow puppet) performance, being hung above the dalang's head behind the kelir (cloth screen) so that its coconut oil-fueled flame projects a flickering light on the puppets. The mobile nature of the light animates the projected shadows, an illusion that modern electric lights fail to impart.
