A rare Wedung in original shealth and damascened blade

A very rare and fine wedung, traditional Javanese side dagger
Surakarta, Central Java
traditionally worn on the left side with the keris slipped within the waist sash at the back and restricted to nobility such as blood princes and high court dignitaries
With four bands of very fine buffalo horn fastenings and clasp on the wooden shealth
in this very uncommon example, the grasp or handle is made of a very rare ebony hardwood which is unknown on Java and must have been sourced from outlying islands, possibly as tributes to the court
from the extremely fine and robust form of the blade, it can be certain that this is an early piece dating from the 18th - 19th centuries and very typical of the empus at the Kasunanan Court of the Surakarta Hadiningrat
